Talking about artwork when it is a secret commission - how would you do it?

Ivan Jones

As October gets underway and Christmas approaches, it is time for me to get into my commission work. With three ( possibly four ) in the pipeline, it is important to keep the details of the artwork under wraps but I also need to have something to chat to you about.

What would you suggest I do? If it was your commission would you be happy for me to post glimpses of the artwork in progress as long as it did give away the full artwork? It is getting the balance right I think. Below is the first collage of me working on the ears....

The aim is to reveal my techniques without giving away the distinctive features of the portrait being commissioned....Next is the eyes.....

I think I am not doing too badly here - showing you how I add the catchlight then building layers of colour with pastel pencils. Next is the nose.....

Here it gets a little tricky - I have kept the eyes out of the pictures as well as the muzzle as this is the distinctive feature of this lovely dog. Here I am building up the layers of colours of the nose. Note I am using purples as well as browns....

Anyway, I hope that if this was your commission, you would be happy with what I have shown you here. I do enjoy giving you glimpses of my pastel artwork in progress as it may give you confidence in my ability to produce something special for you too!! Catch up with you soon.....
